What is the Tamil Safe Space (TSS)?

The Tamil Safe Space offers a welcoming and supportive environment for individuals dealing with suicidal thoughts or emotional distress. It is a volunteer run, non clinical service, providing compassionate and empathetic support from volunteer PEER CARE Companions who have a lived experience of suicide and have received training to support individuals in distress. The creation of this space and its support services involved collaboration with community members and those with lived experience.

It offers:

  • Non-clinical space - operating in a discrete space based at a community centre
  • Operating after hours (refer to session times above)
  • Peer-led - support is provided by peer volunteers with a lived experience of suicidal crisis referred to as Peer Care Companions.

  • Peer Care Companions receive specialised peer training, suicide intervention skills training, and support
  • A minimum of 2 x Peer CARE Companions are available at each session
  • A no wrong door approach - all people 18+ and all backgrounds are welcome
  • Provide information to other support services of their choice
